If you're on a beach holiday and want to get out and about, there are two very useful tours of the island which can give you an excellent insight into what makes Lanzarote so special.
Once a quarry, the Jardín de Cactus was designed by César Manrique in the 1970s, to create a new use for an industrial area, it turned out to be Manrique's last work which encompassed a large area.
Lanzarote is still an active volcano island, though the last major eruption was in in 1732, when large parts of the island were destroyed in a very fierce eruption. A smaller eruption followed in 1824. The most famous protected landscape on the island is Parque Nacional de Timanfaya, it truly is home to outstanding natural beauty.
The 18th Century Castillo de San José helped the island to build its way out of a dark period in its history. Ravaged by drought, volcano eruptions and social decline, the islanders worked hard to build a fortress to protect the island from pirates. Today it's home to a restaurant and internationally acclaimed museum.
Every year the Ironman Canarias Triathlon takes place on Lanzarote. Part of the International Ironman World Championships, if you win this you win a place in the final in Hawaii.
