Scenic Tours If you're on a beach holiday and want to get out and about, there are two very useful tours of the island which can give you an excellent insight into what makes Lanzarote so special.

South Lanzarote Scenic and Nature Tour

The island is different everywhere you go - the dramatic and lunar-like landscapes of Timanfaya, the green and luscious parts of the north. César Manrique's art works feature heavily around the island, adding more attractions to the unique island.

Tours depart Tuesday and Friday between 08:25 and 09:10, and last around 6 hours with an English speaking guide. You'll be escorted around the dramatic landscape of Timanfaya National Park, which is Lanzarote's most popular natural feature. You can take a camel ride around the slopes of the mountains, and visit the La Geria wine region.

You'll take in the green lake of El Golfo, a rare example of hydro-volcanism, and down to El Janubio to see how nature and industry work hand-in-hand with the salt plains.

The tour stops for a three course lunch at El Patio - a 19th Century farmer's house which has been preserved and converted into a museum with the traditional furniture and tools of the time.

Tours are available from Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca or Puerto del Carmen, and you'll be dropped back at the resort in time for a siesta.

North Lanzarote Scenic and Nature Tour

The north of Lanzarote is a complete world away from the volcanic chaos of the south. Great parts of the island are still covered by ash and lava, but the Lanzaroteños have managed to cultivate vineyards between the fiery mountains.

The greener northern region is home to several of Manrique's works - you'll be collected from your hotel in Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen or Costa Teguise between 08:00 and 09:00 and be taken with an English speaking guide to the North.

Just a few of the locations you'll visit are: The valley of a thousand palms, where the town of Haria is nested, surrounded by the tallest mountain range on the island - Risco de Famara.

The green caves - the longest volcanic galleries in the world - are next, and down to Jameos del Agua - the same cave, but just as magical and mystifying. You'll also visit Mirador del Rio - a lookout with breathtaking views across to La Graciosa and two tiny islets - Montaña Clara and Alegranza.

And of course, you'll be dropped back to your resort for a siesta.
