Fiestas Carnival takes place on different dates and in different locations and traditionaly starts the last week of February, the best places to see it are in Arrecife and Puerto del Carmen, with smaller events taking place in Costa Teguise & Playa Blanca.
In Arrecife, Carnival is held across a week, building up to the main big pocession and fabulously decorated floats & costumes
Arrecife Carnival 2010, ran from 5th to the 17th of February. The main parade in the Capital Arrecife, takes place on Monday 15th February 2010, with the resort town parades of PDC, Costa Teguise, and Playa Blanca held on the following week. Every year Carnival has a theme, this years theme was decided by the festivals committee to be based on the late King of pop, Michael Jackson, with the Carnival parade costumes depicting the magic and fun of MJ over the decades. The annual Fiesta de San Gines in late August (around the 25th) in Arrecife, San Gines is the patron Saint of the Capital of the island. His memory is celebrated very August for two weeks, with planned fiesta events finishing on the Playa del Reducto, the main beach, with a massive fireworks display.
Gay Pride LGBT Pride 2010 - 17 July 2010 Health It may be your first time abroad or you may be a seasoned traveller, remember to always take sensible precautions whist you are on hoilday, eat and drink freely, drink plenty of bottled water, and watch the sun (we don't mean look at it) especially between the hours off 10 am & 3 pm, the locals don't take a siesta without reason, don't forget you are just off the coast of North Africa. Lanzarote is also known for its winds, they may cool you down so you won't feel how hot it acutualy is and will offer no protection from sunburn, so make sure you have a good sun screen on (with a high sun protection), and if like some of the Lanzarote Gay Guide Team you are follicaly challenged a cap or sun hat is a must. In An Emergency If you need to contact the Police or Ambulance service in an emergency, you can call 112, but Lanzarote is part of Spain and also has direct numbers to the emergency services - so if you know you definitely want the local police, and not the Guardia Civil, who are usually not from the island, use 092. 092 - Local Police - Policia Local Hospitals & Medical Centers The medical care available in Lanzarote is of a high standard. Both private and state run. Most resort towns are well serviced with Medical Centers with the Main Hospital, Lanzarote's state hospital is situated on Calle Terra, San Bartolome, this is just off the main road to Arrecife.
Medical insurance as on any holiday is strongly advised, even though EU citizens can obtain free medical treatment or in some cases a refund of some medical costs by using the E111 Card, (European Health Insurance Card) remember that this only entitles to state provided medical treatment, and that you will be treated the same as an insured citizen of that country, make sure that you have this card with you, the cost of treatment will have to be paid at the time, retain reciepts for refund or claim towards costs from Insurance. Chemists are reconisable by a Green Cross sign and are called Farmacia, after hours notices of the duty famacia are displayed in all farmica doors. Most minor medical problems can be solved in farmica's with most well known brands of popular remedies. Useful tip - If you are on special medication, i.e for HIV / Heart / etc, bring it with you in the original prescribed containers, and remember to make a note of the name / s of your medication (the medical name, and not the brand as the same medication may be made under a different brand name in Spain). This information is very helpful, should you run out of or lose your medication whist being away from home.
